(TROY) Four of the leading lights in contemporary creative music will perform at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 8 PM as the Splatto Festival Chorus. This rare assembly brings together Todd Reynolds (Bang on a Can, Yo Yo Ma, Meredith Monk) on violins/laptop, Ed Mann (Zappa) on percussion/electronics, David Barrett (Banda Elastica, Splatter Trio) on saxophones, and Troy native-gone-global Michael Bisio on bass. The show is the last of 13 to be videotaped live for the series "Free Jazz from the Sanctuary" for release later this year. Admission for the all-ages show is $10. Dave Barrett - saxophones

Dave Barrett was a founding member of several seminal Northern California groups, including No Sisters, Club Foot Orchestra, Bill’s Lawn, and the Splatter Trio. He has been fortunate to have played and/or recorded with the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Butch Morris, Sergey Kuryokhin, Sam Rivers, Tim Berne, Vinny Golia, Mr. Bungle, Georg Grawe, Otomo Yoshihida, Elliot Sharp, John Tchicai, Frank Gratkowski, Myra Melford, Glenn Spearman, Snakefinger, the Dead Kennedys, Joe Jackson, Mamie van Doren, Jenny Schienman, the Instant Composers Group, Trevor Dunn, Carla Kihlstedt, Banda Elastica, Bobby Kapp, Lila Downs, Psychotic Pineapple, Don Bemis and his Misty Blues, and many others. He has composed music for film, theatre, and dance, and has worked with poets associated with the Bay Area Language poetry scene, including Carla Harryman, Steve Benson, and Norman Fisher. He has appeared on recordings for such labels as Black Saint, Rastascan, New World, Leo, and Music & Arts.

Michael Bisio – bass
Michael Bisio appears on over 45 CDs; he is leader on 10 CDs and co-leads 7 duet recordings. Michael's first release as bandleader, In Seattle, (Silkheart), was chosen as one of the "Best Jazz Records of the 1980's" by the Village Voice. Upcoming releases in 2009 include two Michael Bisio Quartet CDs on the CIMP and Not Two labels, duets with Connie Crothers, (Mutable), and Old Dog with special guest Karl Berger, (Porter Records).

Joe McPhee and Michael have created a body of work that includes two duo CDs, Finger Wigglers and Zebulon, (CIMP) in addition to over a dozen other releases. Other artists Michael has collaborated with include: Wayne Horvitz, Charles Gayle, Bob Nell, Sunny Murray, Louie Belogenis, John Tchicai, Pauline Oliveros, Vinny Golia, Julian Priester, Eyvind Kang, Diedre Murray, Rashied Ali, Jim Nolet, Saadet Turkoz, Dominic Duval, Tomas Ulrich, Oluyemi Thomas, Matthew Shipp, Connie Crothers, Sonny Simmons, Jay Rosen, Avram Fefer and Stephen Gauci.

As a composer Michael has been recognized with nine project grants from various arts organizations, in 2003 he was awarded an Artist Trust Fellowship.

Award-winning mallet player, percussionist, composer and sound designer Ed Mann is said to be the most recorded musician in Frank Zappa's catalog, and has also has also performed/ recorded/provided sound and music for and with ASANI, Mark Isham, Rickie Lee Jones, Andy Summers, Kenny Loggins, Ambrosia, Tammy Wynette, Sting, Los Lobos, Blotto, John Cage, Bill Bruford, Shadowfax, Frogg Cafe, Wrong Object, Project Object, The Grandmothers, London Symphony Orchestra, Don Ellis, Repercussion Unit, California EAR Unit, Lou Harrison, Don Preston, Bruce Fowler, Jeff Rona, Hans Zimmer, Klaus Badelt, Harry Gregson Williams, CJ Vanston, Pat Williams, David Torn, and John Bergamo.

Winner of several top awards in Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's polls, Ed has released 6 critically acclaimed CDs of original music, has over 80 CD recordings to his credit, composes music and sound for interactive media and film, and is active internationally as a performer, sound artist, consultant and workshop facilitator.

Todd Reynolds – violin and laptop

Composer, conductor, arranger and violinist, Todd Reynolds is a longtime member of Bang On A Can, Steve Reich and Musicians and Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. Reynolds makes use of computer technology and digital loops to sculpt sounds in real time, integrating minimalist, pop, Jazz, Indian, African, Celtic and indigenous folk musics. Todd has appeared and/or recorded with such artists as Anthony Braxton, Meredith Monk, Uri Caine, John Cale, Steve Coleman, Joe Jackson, Dave Liebman, Yo-Yo Ma, Graham Nash, Greg Osby, Steve Reich, Marcus Roberts and Todd Rundgren, and has commissioned and premiered many new works, including works by John King, Phil Kline, Michael Gordon, Neil Rolnick, Julia Wolfe, David Lang, Evan Ziporyn and Randall Wolff. His interdisciplinary work includes ongoing collaborations with SoundPainter Walter Thompson as well as media artists Bill Morrison and Luke DuBois and sound artist Jody Elff.

Reynolds is a founder of the band known as Ethel, a critically acclaimed amplified string quartet. He has also produced Still Life With Microphone, an ongoing theater piece, as well as Nuove Uova [new eggs], new works for violin and electricity, a 'new-music cabaret' of sorts. He is the recipient of ASCAP awards, an American Composers Forum Grant for Still Life with Mic and a 2003 Meet-the-Composer Commissioning Music/USA award.

Local presentation of the Splatto Festival Chorus is made possible by volunteer labor, small financial contributions from hundreds of patrons of The Sanctuary For Independent Media, in-kind support from the Arts Department at RPI, and funding from the Presenting program at the New York State Council on the Arts and The NY State Music Fund (established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors).

The Sanctuary for Independent Media is a telecommunications production facility dedicated to community media arts, located in an historic former church at 3361 6th Avenue in North Troy, NY. The Sanctuary hosts screening, production and performance facilities, training in media production and a meeting space for artists, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.

I mentioned the Allman's tribute to King Curtis from 1969, and a guy calls to tell me that King Curtis was murdered on a Friday the 13th in 1971. So I guess it was from 1971! I just dig the fact that I have listeners that know this stuff. And Maggie Welsh liked the Allman's stuff enough that she drove to the station just to give me a hug.
